Dr. Bennet Omalu was born in Nigeria, but gained recognition as a neuropathologist in America for performing an autopsy on former NFL star Mike Webster. He discovered CTE in Webster’s brain, and in the brains of several other former NFL players. Together with his colleagues, he published these findings in the journal Neurosurgery.

This CTE discovery and subsequent battle with the NFL over the dangers of football inspired the movie Concussion in 2015. Dr. Omalu is credited with being the first to discover CTE brain degeneration in football players, caused by repeated blows to the head during the game. In November 2017, Dr. Omalu and his team authored a study that, for the first time ever, confirmed CTE in a living person.
